There are many Metroid-style games which allow you to unlock ability "keys" which don't really open your gameplay choices, but just grant you access to new levels/areas. Interesting to think about gameplay tools that let you access *creative*, solution-focused "spaces" rather than simple geographical ones.
I feel like the stricter Metroid interpretations are only keys. I love the genre, and have played it extensively, but I feel Metroid Dread falls prey to this the most. Most of the new weapons or abilities ONLY grant access. Many of them are applied automatically, so you are just more powerful, but nothing really changes. I found it sorta boring, which is why I think Hollow Knight has the crown. But, it is a clear stylistic choice and I happen to have a preference.
